Frances reaction to Germany is to build up armed forces. Makes Germany more likely to build up theirs! Also want revenge.

Austria-Hungary & Russia = tricky relationship. A-H think Russia is making trouble in the Balkans, so they are scared of the break up of their Empire.

Russia, Britain and France.

What was Sarajevo?
The spark for the war! Franz Ferdinand assassinated. (Heir to the Austrian throne).
Why did Sarajevo cause a war?
Ferdinand’s father got mad! Wanted revenge against Serbia bc he knew the assassins were hiding there. Serbia was allied with Russia so looked to them for help.
What was the Schlieffen plan?
Germanys plan to invade France going through Holland and Belgium originally, but then Belgium.
What was the Schlieffen plans main aim?
Speed - it was all about knocking France out quickly to avoid war on two fronts.
Why did the Schlieffen plan fail?
Russia mobilised quickly, Belgium stopped the Germans at Liege. BEF got to Fr quickly and helped attack the Germans at the Marne. French resistance. Good French tactics. Good tactics and the Marne.
Which reasons for the Schlieffen plans failure were to do with the British.
BEF mobilised and helped.
