Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
The ability to regulate a stable internal environment despite changing external environments in a negative feedback loop.
What cells in the pancreas release insulin?
Beta cells
What hormone does the pituitary gland secrete to stimulate the release of thyroid hormones from the thyroid?
TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
What is the process of glucose being converted to glycogen in cells?
Glycogenesis
Where is glycogen largely stored in humans?
Liver and skeletal muscle cells
Why does vasodilation occur?
Blood vessels expand in size to increase the amount of heat loss by getting closer to the skin thus, losing more heat to air. This is also why our skin feels hot when we exercise vigorously.
Name 3 homeostatic mechanisms
Blood glucose levels, thermoregulation and osmoregulation.
If our temperature drops, what would our blood vessels do in order to preserve heat in our bodies?
They vasoconstrict, they decrease their size to allow less blood to flow to the skin and in the bloodstream allowing more heat to be stored in our bodies.
What is type 1 diabetes?
