Pituitary Gland

Inhibits FSH
Stimulates LH release
Makes lining of uterus grow again after the cycle
What does LH do and where is it produced?
Pituitary Gland
Stimulates the release of the egg from the ovary during ovulation
What does progesterone do in the menstrual cycle and where is it produced ?
Empty follicle in ovaries
Maintains lining of uterus during second stage of the cycle
Inhibits FSH and LH release
What can reduce fertility?
Contraception
What are the types of contraception and some more examples?
Hormonal: the pill, an injection
Non-hormonal: condoms, diaphragms, intrauterine devices, spermicide, surgery
What does the fertility drug do?
Gives FSH and LH when a woman’s levels are too low which stimulates eggs to mature
What does IVF do?
- Gives Woman FSH and LH which matures eggs
- collecting the eggs
- fertilising the eggs with sperm from father
- inserting 1-2 embryos into the uterus
What are the problems with fertility treatments?
- it is emotionally and physically stressful
- the success rate is low
- can lead to multiple births which are high risk
