Hooke's Law Flashcards
What is Hooke’s Law?
Hooke’s Law states that the force applied to a spring is proportional to its extension, providing that it does not exceed the spring limit.
What is the proportional limit?
The proportional limit (P) is the point beyond which any further increase in the load applied to a spring will produce an extension that is no longer proportional to the force.
What is the Elastic Limit?
The elastic limit (E) is the point beyond which any further increase in the load applied to a spring will produce a permanent stretch.
What is Elastic Deformation?
For loads within the elastic limit, there is elastic deformation; if the load is removed the spring returns to its original size and shape.
What is Inelastic or Plastic Deformation?
Beyond the elastic limit, there is plastic deformation; the material is permanently stretched.
