Hooke's Law Flashcards
What is Hooke’s Law?
Relationship between extension of a stretched wire and force
What is the formula for Hooke’s Law?
Force = stiffness constant x change in length
What does a tensile force do?
Stretches object
What does a compressive force do?
Squashes object
On a force-extension graph, why does the line start to curve?
The force has become great enough and the wire has reached its elastic limit
What happens if you increase the force past the elastic limit?
The material will be permanently stretched
What is the limit of proportionality?
Point beyond which the force is no longer proportional to extension
What is the formula for extension?
Extension = new length - original length
What happens to a material if it’s deformation is elastic?
Material returns to its original shape once the forces are removed so it has no permanent extension
Hooke’s Law is obeyed
What happens to a material of its deformation is plastic?
Material is permanently stretched (after force has been removed)
