Hormonal response Flashcards
What is the hormonal yoyo diet effect?
Going all day without eating and thinking it’s healthy, then when you get home you are ravenous for food.
What happens when you don’t eat on a schedule?
Your blood sugar goes down as your body tries to survive. Your natural hormonal response from your body is that it tells you to eat.
What is the goal of hormone response and diet?
To keep hormone levels stable and consistent throughout the day. This is achieved by getting the type, time and portion size right
What hormone is responsible for storage?
Insulin tells the body to store nutrients, vitamins and minerals
How do we spike insulin through dietary factors?
We look at the glycemic index. Foods with a higher GI spike insulin faster
How do we get the body to refuel after exercise?
By spiking insulin
One factor to stay ahead of the hunger?
Incorporate foods that do not spike insulin
What is the opposite of Insulin?
Glucagon, which is released when someone has low blood sugar levels
How is glucagon beneficial?
Puts individuals in a more fat adapted state. Meaning they will use fats more efficiently. This will help those that want to lose weight when doing aerobic activities
What is leptin?
Hormone that tells you when you’re full. Released from fat cells and effects energy expenditure and appetite. People who excessively overeat may become leptin resistant.
What is grehlin?
This hormone tells you when you are hungry. It’s a time-released hormone, so if you start eating at the same time every day, your body will begin releasing ghrelin at the same time every day.
How does sleep effect grehlin?
When sleep restricted this can increase grehlin
How to blunt the effects of grehlin?
You can eat a high protiein meal in the monring?
How to prompt hormone response
insulin to prompt nutrient storage or glucagon to encourage the release of energy
