HOW TO EVALUATE PERI-IMPLANT MUCOSITIS & PERI-IMPLANTITIS Flashcards
1
Q
What is Peri-Implant mucositis
A
- Peri-implant mucositis is a reversible inflammatory lesion of the soft tissues surrounding an endosseous implant in the absence of loss of supporting bone or continuing marginal bone loss
- The lesion is located lateral to the junctional/ pocket epithelium but does not extend into the supracrestal connective tissue zone “apical” of the junctional/pocket epithelium
- The prevalence for general patient-level Peri-implant mucositis was 45%
2
Q
What is Peri-Implantitis
A
- Peri-implantitis is a site-specific infectious disease that causes an inflammatory process in soft tissues , and bone loss around an osseointegrated implant in function
- The general patient-level prevalence for Peri-implantitis is 20%
3
Q
Peri-implant health
The diagnostic definition of peri-implant health is based on the following criteria:
A
- absence of peri-implant signs of soft tissue inflammation (redness, swelling, profuse bleeding on probing),
- the absence of further additional bone loss following initial healing.
4
Q
Peri-implant mucositis - clinical & radiographic characteristics
Clinical characteristics
A
- The main one is bleeding on gentle probing , while other clinical signs of inflammation – such as erythema and swelling – may also occur.
- An increase in probing depth is often observed in the presence of peri-implant mucositis because of swelling or a decrease in probing resistance .
5
Q
Peri-implant mucositis - clinical & radiographic characteristics
Radiographic characteristics
A
In addition, radiographic images should be evaluated to exclude bone level changes consistent with the definition of peri-implantitis, as described later in the presentation.
6
Q
Peri-implantitis
Clinical findings
A
- Vertical destruction of the crestal bone
- Formation of a peri-implant pocket >4mm
- Bleeding or suppuration after gently probing
- Tissue redness and swelling
- Mobility
7
Q
Peri-implantitis
Radiographic findings
A
Bone loss

Q
Conclusion
A
- Peri-implant mucositis is a reversible inflammatory lesion of the soft tissues surrounding an implant
- Whereas Peri-implantitis is an infectious disease that causes an inflammatory process in soft tissues, and bone loss around an implant
- Clinical findings of Peri-implant mucositis is bleeding and or suppuration on gentle probing. Erythema and swelling may also occur.
- Clinical findings of Peri-implantitis is vertical destruction of the crestal bone, formation of a peri-implant pocket >4mm, BOP or suppuration after gently probing, tissue redness swelling and mobility
