“Self”
Is defined as a single, continuous basis of personal identity, the “essence” of a person that makes them who they are and their whole life.

“Self” is derived from Judeo-Christin concept of “soul”
“Essence”
The definitive property that makes something what it is.

Changeable secondary properties that don’t affect the essence.

Hume’s view
P1: all our ideas are based on impressions.
P2: we have no impressions of the self.
P3: “self” is something single and lasting, and all our impressions are manly, fleeting, and temporary.
P4: we talk about “self” but we really have no single, coherent idea of “self”.
C: there is no self.
“Ideas”
Derived from sense perception, used in thoughts, contemplation.
“Impression”
Sense perception or feeling an emotion/hunger/pleasure.
