Hyperlipidemia Flashcards
Hyperlipidemia causes
Primary-genetic, abnormalities leading to increased production of cholesterol or decreased clearance of cholesterol
Secondary-environmental, factors including medications, disease conditions, diets high in fat & cholesterol, obesity, smoking
Plasma lipids
Cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids
LDL
Low density lipoproteins, produced in liver & peripheral cells
60-75% of total cholesterol, directly related to the development of atherosclerosis
BAD cholesterol
HDL
High density lipoproteins, produced in liver & intestine
Functions to remove LDL & triglycerides transport to liver for metabolism (reverse cholesterol transport)
GOOD cholesterol
Antioxidants
Such as vitamin E, prevent the oxidation of LDL & may be beneficial in preventing CHD
Oxidized LDL is more atherogenic then non oxidized LDL
Primary symptom of atherosclerosis
Chest pain (angina)
Due to compromised blood flow in vessel lumen
Primary prevention
Management of patients w/no evidence of CHD or risk equivalents
Secondary prevention
Management of patients w/CHD or risk equivalents
