hypothalamus and pituitary gland Flashcards
what is the hypothalamus?
is a part of the brain that has a vital role in controlling many bodily functions including the release of hormones from the pituitary gland.
what is the pituitary gland?
a small, bean-shaped gland situated at the base of your brain, somewhat behind your nose and between your ears
what is the hypothalamus the link of?
is the link between the nervous and endocrine system
what is the endocrine system?
is a network of glands and organs located throughout the body.
what is the endocrine system responsible for?
- Responsible for regulating a range of bodily functions through the release of hormones
what are hormones secreted by and what do they travel through?
- Hormones are secreted by the glands of the endocrine system, traveling through the bloodstream to various organs and tissues in the body.
what is the job of the hormones?
- The hormones then tell these organs and tissues what to do or how to function.
what does the pituitary gland control?
controls several other hormone glands in your body, including the thyroid and adrenals, the ovaries and testicles.
what are the two lobes of the pituitary gland?
Neurohypophysis (posterior lobe)
Adenohypophysis (anterior lobe)
what is the role of the posterior lobe?
receives, stores and releases hormones from the hypothalamus
what is the role of the anterior lobe?
synthesizes and secretes a number of hormones
how many major hormones does the pituitary gland secrete?
9
what connects the hypothalamus to the posterior lobe?
a neural connection, hypothalamic-hypophyseal tract
what are transported to the posterior lobe from the hypothalamus?
- Nuclei of hypothalamus synthesize oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
what connects the anterior lobe to the hypothalamus?
a vascular connection - the hypophyseal portal system
it has no direct neural contact
