Immunity Flashcards
Where do immune cells start life?
B cells start life in bone marrow
T cells start life in the thymus
Where do immune cells go after the bone marrow or the thymus?
either into the bloodstream or the lymphatic system
What are neutrophils?
the first cells to arrive to kill invaders
ingest bacteria by phagocytosis
when neutrophils die fighting infection they form pus
What are T helper cells?
co-ordinator cells
if the infection is not controlled by neutrophils the immune cells need a co-ordinator to control the next stages
give instruction to other immune cells and help look out for invaders
What are killer T-cells?
designed to kill virus-infected cells
punch holes in virus-infected cells letting the contents ooze out
What are B cells?
produces an antibody that sticks bacteria found in the bloodstream together into a blob
then immobilises the bacteria
What do macrophages do?
clean up dead cells and virus particles
What are suppressor cells?
a calming influence after an infection has gone
they slow down the immune system and stops damage to healthy cells
