East India Company

A

A private British company, not government, hired an army to take over most of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Burma.
They took over most of India and the East Indian Company is what the unit is based around.

Sepoy

A

Army made up of English officers and Indian soldiers.

Sepoy’s were the people who controlled India and lead the rebellion.

Sepoy Rebellion

A

Sepoy refused to use the British bullets, since a rumor went around that it was greased in beef (an animal, in the Indians cultures that are sacred). However if they refused, they would be imprisoned so they fought back.
It forced the British government to get involved. Soon after the East India Company gave claims on India to the British government, starting the Raj period.

The East India Company gave claim on India to the British government (British controlled India). Lasted from 1850-1946.
To show how long Europe was in control of India.

A

A crop that was not used by the farmers, themselves; however, crops that are traded. (a crop produced for its commercial value rather than for use by the grower)
The use of cash crop plantations led to starvation in India.

Berlin Conference

A

All Europe wanted parts of Africa, but they were afraid it would lead to war. Instead, reps from Europeans countries met in Berlin to discuss who would own parts of Africa. Only invited representatives from Europe, no Africans. They only took into consideration of the resources, not the ethnic groups or tribal boundaries.
Lead to war between Europeans and Africans (also Africans themselves).

Menelik II

A

Ruler of Ethiopia. Lead ethiopia to independence from the Europeans. Played Europeans off each other and got a large stockpile of guns. Italians tried to cheat him out of his land, so he declared war and won.
One of the only independent African country.

Ottoman Empire

A

Owned land most of the middle east, north Africa, and southeast Europe. Was a scientific and cultural capital of the world for hundreds of years. Fell apart because infighting and corruption led to lack of progress at the same time that Europe was industrializing.
This led to the Crimean War.

Crimean War

A

Europeans all wanted control most of the middle east for access to the atlantic and pacific ocean, as well as control of major TRADE ROUTES. Russia attacked, and England and France joined with the Ottomans.
Was the end of Russia’s dominance in Europe and the start of the collapse of the Russian Monarchy. This also lead to Russia wanting to join WW1.
