A

Not all individuals have the ability to be self-reliant and therefore some state intervention is necessary. Freedom is achieved by an individual who has the ability to grow and flourish.

What does Immanuel Kant believe?

A

The categorical Imperative > Individuals are unique and have equal worth, they should always be used as ‘ends’ and not ‘means’. People should not be used as instruments to achieve a particular goal, but should be regarded as possessing their own intrinsic value.

What do classical liberals believe about individuals ?

A

Absolute belief in the primacy of the individual. Belief that society has little role in people’s life (govt. = oppression) therefore we should all seek what is best for ourselves which will naturally be best for everyone.

What do modern liberals believe about individualism?

A

Primacy of the Individual, however not all can be free. Belief that developments in nations has led to inequalities within society, therefore whilst the individual should not be suppressed they should be supported by govt. intervention.
