What is The Bridge?
A Swedish/Danish coproduction. The Bridge is an example of a Scandinavian sub-genre of crime drama - Nordic noir. The title refers to the Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark and is metaphor for the collaboration between the two police forces which commenced after a body was discovered in the middle of the bridge.

What does being produced by two companies mean?
They had easier access to two countries for filming and shared production costs meaning higher production budgets
Why can international co productions cause logistic problems?
Conflict over which country they legally employ the cast and crew form - the production team agreed to follow the working regulations of Sweden.
Where did some of the funding for series 3 come from?
The Copenhagen film fund meaning they employed more Danish cast and crew members. Also received funding from Creative Europe Media giving them a high budget and high quality feel to the show.
What makes shows appealing to audiences?
When production values seem high - also helps appeal to global audiences.
Who is the public service broadcaster in Sweden?
SVT - meaning there content is funded by license fees and their content must “serve the public” in some way eg be cultural

Subtitled “foreign language” programs still considered quite niche by broadeners and audiences.
What channel was it shown on in Denmark?
DR1 which is also a public service broadcaster and license fee funded. Denmark is a small country and almost everyone there watched DR content so broadcasting on this channel is a great way of reaching large national audiences.

BBC 4 - focuses on showing programmes that feature arts, music and culture.

BBC 4 showed The Bridge at 9pm on a Saturday which is a peak viewing slot. Its also a slot that the BBC 4 dedicate to showing foreign language drama so its a great way of targeting fans of this genre.

Viewers may have found scenes of a leg being blown off too gruesome or may have been offended by the reference to gender and or PTSD.
