Infection And Response Flashcards
Name the 4 types of pathogens
Virus
Fungi
Bacteria
Protists
How can we spread diseases?
Air
Water
Direct contact
How is athletes foot spread?
Direct contact
How to prevent infection spread
Vaccination
Hygiene (washing hands)
Isolation
Disease vectors
How do viruses make us ill?
Invasion- they survive by invading host cells
Replication- the virus particles insets its own DNA into the host cells.
Invade and burst cells- once burst the viruses is released and can infect other cells
Illness- the cell damage makes us feel ill
Give 2 examples of viruses
Measles
HIV
What are 2 bacterial diseases?
Gonorrhoea- STD
Salmonella- food not cooked properly
What is bacteria?
Bacteria are small living cells that either damage cells directly or by producing toxins
What is an example of a fungi ?
Rose black spot ( fungi on leaves)
Give an example of a protists
Malaria
What is a pathogen?
A microorganism that causes a disease
What is an antibody?
Protein molecules produced by the white blood cells when recognising pathogens
What are antigens?
Proteins found on the surface of some pathogens, with specific shapes that act like signals to allow cell recognition
What is a vaccination?
A vaccination is the main technique for helping the immune system recognise and destroy pathogens. A vaccination injects a dead or inactive form of a pathogen into the blood
