Responding to injuries and medical conditions in sport (SALTAPS)

A

Stop the game if a player is injured and observe the injury

Ask questions about the injury, where does it hurt?

Look for specific signs such as bruising, swelling or bleeding.

Touch the injured area to identify pain regions

Active movement ask the individual if they can move it without assistance

Passive movement move the area through its ROM

Strength testing , ask the induvial to stand up and put pressure on it.

if at the LOOK stage there are obvious signs of injury, the player should be removed from the game or need to stop exercising to receive treatment.

Acute management

A

acute soft injuries trigger inflammation, bruising and pain and can cause further damage if not treated quickly.
PRICE is used to minimise muscle or joint injury and speed recovery.

PRICE

A

Protect - protect injury from further damage for example using a support or splint.

Rest - rest the injury for 2-3 days. Then reintroduce movement gradually.

Ice - ice the painful area to reduce swelling and bruising. Do it for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours.

Compress - the injured area with an elastic bandage to help limit swelling and movement.

Elevate - your injury by resting it above the level of your heart.
