Inland Hydrology Flashcards

1
Q

Are lakes shallow? Explain!

A

When drawn to scale, all lakes look like superflat pancakes because the depth is small compared to the length.

Q

What is the pelagial zone?

A

The freewater, open water, region in lakes. It is divided in the trophogenic and tropholytic layer.

Q

What is the Trophogenic layer?

A

The part of the palagic zone where sunlights still gets through. Biomass is build here from photosynthesis.

Q

What is the Compensation layer?

A

Where sunlight gets si dim that photosythesis isn’t really possible.

Q

What is the Litoral?

A

Ufer -> Shelfs -> Slope until the profundal zone.

The differentiation from shelf to slope is that slope is very steep.

Q

Whats the deal with material going into the lake at the shelf?

A

At the Ufer and shelf, land gets into the lake due to erosion. This is mostly at the shelf area and decreases when you you deeper into the lake. Thats why we have a shallow area where this material is lying around.
This also happens in the ocean.

Q

What is Lambert-Beer’s Law?

A

It describes how light dexreases exponentially with depth. There is a scary looking equation for it.

Q

What is the Mixing regime of Lakes?

A

With the seasons the mixing changes. In Spring and autumn the water completely mixes around in the lake.
In Both Summer and winter, the bottom has 4°C and is separated from the weather-effected temperature, which can be quite warm in summer and frozen in winter.
The line dividing the 4°C water from the rest is called “Thermocline”

Q

What is Metalimnion?

A

The border between the 4°C water in lakes from the rest in summer and winter.
The upper part is called Epilimnion, the lower part is called Hypolimnion.
