Integumentary system Flashcards
Integument
The largest system of the body
16% body weight
1.5- 2m
How many parts of the system
2
Cutaneous membrane(Skin)
organ composed of superficial epithelium and underlying connective tissue
Subcutaneous layer
beneath the dermis
What does the subcutaneous layer attach?
Attaches the skin to deeper structures like bone and muscles
Accessory structures includes?
Hair, nails, and a variety of exocrine glands
Functions
Protects, maintains body temp., synthesizes, stores lipids, sensory perception, excretes, prevents water loss
Avascular
nutrients and oxygen diffuse from capillaries in the dermis
Stratified squamous epithelium
capable of keratinizing
Replaces itself every 25-45 days
Thick skin
Covers palms of hands & soles of the feet
5 layers/strata
Thin skin
Covers most of the body
Has 4 layers/strata
Stratum basale
Deepest layer, Basale cells constantly going under mitosis: cells get pushed upwards
Stratum spinosum(Spiny layer)
Produced by division of basale
cells shrink until cytoskeleton sticks out
Stratum granulosum (grainy layer)
Produces keratin
What is keratin
Durable and water resistant, coats the surface of the skin, forms basic structure of hair, calluses and nails
Stratum lucidum(clear layer)
Not in all skin regions, only where skin is hairless and extra thick
Covers stratum granulosum-flattened, densely packed cells
Stratum corneum (horn layer)
Most superficial layer
15-30 cell layers thick of keratinized and cornified cells
Where does skin color come from?
pigments and blood amount and kind of melanin
When is activity increased
when exposed to sunlight
Freckles
small, pigmented spots with greater than average melanin production
Where does carotene accumulate
in the epidermis cells and fatty tissues of the dermis
able to be converted into Vitamin A
Amount of Oxygen
rich hemoglobin in the dermal blood cells
what happens to blood vessels in heat
Dilate which causes the skin to redden
Cyanosis
Blush tint to skin due to severe reduction in blood flow or oxygen
Jaundice
Yellowish color to the skin that indicates liver malfunction that normally breaks down the pigment bilirubin
Functions of melancytes
when exposed to sunlight it produces more melanin which the stratum basale cells phagocytized, it accumulates with them
What does melanin from over the superficial side of the nuclei that shields their genetic material
Protective pigment umbrella
What does skin color depend on?
Amount of melanin produced not the number of melanocytes
