Inteoduction To The Lymphstic System Flashcards
Functions
Circulatory- lymph fluid comes from blood vessels, is filtered and returns to blood circ by spleen
Immune- produces wbc via
Lymph nodes
Spleen
Thymus
Components of lymph drainage
Collection
Flow
Reintroduction
How is lymphatic fluid collected
Lymgpatix capillaries surround the caps of circ system
High pressure causes fluid to escape the porous caps which enter the lymph caps
The lymph fluids reach lymph nodes for the FIRST PROCESSING location
Lymph flows proximal until it teaches 2 locations
1)Thoracic duct 2) right lymphatic duct
what is the Thoracic duct
The larger lymph channel that collects lymphatic fluid from the
- left side of the head & neck
- the right shoulder and arm
- everything below the diaphragm
What is the right lymphatic duct
The smaller channel that collects lymph from the right head, neck snd upper limb only
Where so the Right Lymphatic Duct and Thoracic duct drain back into the circ system
Venous angle- 90degree point where the Internal Jugular Vein meets the Subclavian vein
RLD drains into Right Venous Angle
Thoracic duct drains into Left Venous Angle
Anatomy of lymph nodes
Have several Afferent vessels bringing fluid into the node
Fluid enters into the cortex down to the medualla/ central core
If antigens are presents and harmful then the lymph nodes makes Wbc against the antigenic
Fluid leaves via a single EFferent vessels
Lymph nodes have their own venous & arterial supply
Groups of Ln in the body
Cervical - drain head and neck
Axillary- armpit
Lumbar- abdomen
Inguinal- pelvis
Location and size of spleen
Ribs 9-11
1 inch thick, 3 inches wide, 5 inches long
Blood supply to spleen
Splenic artery
Splenic vein
Why does the spleen have such a large arterial supply
It’s role is to provide mechanical filtration of the blood
Why does the spleen have a large Venous supply
To return the broken down components to the liver
Roles of the splee
Mechanical filtration of blood
Immune response by production of wbc in presence of the antigend
Why is trauma to the left side if the abdomen (ribs 9-11) a concern
The spleen is located between ribs 9-11 and susceptible to damage
May lead to rupture of the spleen and loss of a large vol of blood
Hypovolemia- shock
