Intermolecular & Non-Covalent Forces Flashcards
What are intramolecular bonds?
Bonds within a molecule
What are intermolecular bonds?
Bonds between different molecules
What are the five types of non-covalent (Van Der Waals) forces?
- Dispersion forces
- Hydrophobic forces
- Permanent dipole interactions
- Hydrogen bonds
- Ionic interactions
What are dispersive forces?
Dipole-induced dipole attraction - unevenly distributed electrons in orbitals cause a polar molecule with partial charged, with can create an induced dipole
What is an induced dipole?
A polar molecule induces a dipole in a neighbouring molecule by disturbing its electron arrangement
Are dispersive forces short or long lived?
They are short lived
Are dispersive forces strong or weak?
Very weak
Do dispersive forces work over long or short distances?
Short
What does hydrophobic mean?
‘Hate’ water and moves away from it
What does hydrophilic mean?
‘Loves’ water and moves toward it
What part of a phospholipid is hydrophobic?
The tails
What part of a phospholipid is hydrophilic?
The head
What do permanent dipole (or dipole-dipole) interactions require?
A permanent dipole from a partial charge on a covalent bond
Are permanent (or dipole-dipole) interactions long or short lived?
Long lasting
What is the strength of a dipole-dipole attraction determined by?
The electronegativity of the atoms within the dipole-dipole
