Internal Family Systems Flashcards
Who was the founder?
Richard Schwartz
What are the key themes?
concept of the system and investigating the existence of interactions between our various parts.
The self
is stable, unchanging and always positive. it governs the rest of our parts.
Exiles
These are our wounded parts, traumatic experiences, neglect, sadness. We bury deep down inside because they are too painful to acknowledge. By keeping them burried, we protect them from being damaged.
Managers
Managers are what allow us to keep our buried parts buried deep down inside. The role is to manage the day to day living.
Firefighters
When are internal system recognizes that our managers are failing to protect our exiled parts, firefighters must step in to either prevent or manage crisis. Firefighter parts may express themselves through abusing drugs, self harm, withdrawl and isolation.
Goal of therapy?
Is to have to self become the organizer and leader of the various other parts, promoting managers to have more effective roles and reducing the need all together for firefighters.
