Intro To ANS Flashcards
What do the sensory part of the ANS innervate
The viscera of organs
Poorly localised
What do the motor parts of the ANS innervate
Smooth muscle
Glands
Organs
Classification of motor parts of CNS
Sympathetic
-fight or flight
parasympathetic
- rest, digest, read
Enteric - SM of digestive trac
Sympathetic pathway
Short PREsynaptic neuron w/in CNS
-> synapses w/
Long POSTsynaptic neuron at the PARAVERTEBRAL ganglia outside CNS
Location of sympathetic nerves Aka thoracolumbar efferent/motor part of ANS
T1-L2
How do sympathetic signals travel bet/w T1 and L2 in SC
The sympathetic chain travels paravertebrally that joins the ganglia at each level of SC betw T1-L2 aswell as beyond these confines to exert a symoathetic effect to structures outside T1-L4
Whete can the short presynaptic sympathetic neuron synapse
- With a postganglionic cell body At the same level
- With a postganglionic cell body At a higher or lower vertrebral level to the presynaptic neuron
- Exit sympathetic chain without synapsing but synapsing later(SPLANCHNIC)
Explain splanchnic nerves
Presynaptic sympathetic neruons bypass the paravertebral ganglia (up and over) and descend to the aorta
The presynaptic neuron then synapses with PREAORTIC GANGLIA
The preaortic ganglia axon travels alongside blood vessels and reaches the viscera if internal organs
Why do we feel sleepy when reading
Constriction of the pupils activates the parasympathetic nervous system
Location of PNS
Cranio sacral
Cranial portion of PNS
CN3- ocular motor for pupil constriction
CN7/ facial
- for digesting food via sublingual, submandibular and salivary glands
- crying via lacrimal gland
CN9/ glossopharyngeal for parotid gland
Cn10/hypoglossal which travels furthest from the heart, and up to 2/3 of transverse colon
What are the sacral contributions to PNS
Pelvic splanchnic nerves from S2,3,4
Which innervates the rest of digestive tract
Pathway of PNS
Long presynaptic and short postsynaptic at the target organ
What js thr Enteric nervous system
Nerves embedded in hollow organs if digestive tract from oesophageal to rectum
Has 5x the nerves of the spinal cord
Function of enteric NS
Peristalsis
