Introduction of Terms Flashcards
Structural Kinesiology
study of muscles as they are involved in the science of movement
Anatomical Position
- standing upright
- arms at sides
- head facing forward
- feet facing forward
- palms facing forwards
Anterior vs. Posterior
anterior: front
posterior: back
Medial vs. Lateral
medial: towards the midline
lateral: away from the midline
Proximal vs. Distal
proximal: nearest to the trunk/origin
distal: furthest from the trunk/origin
Superior vs. Inferior
superior: above
inferior: below
Dorsal vs. Ventral
dorsal: back
ventral: front (belly or abdomen)
Plantar vs. Palmar vs. Volar
plantar: sole of the foot
palmar: palm of the hand
volar: palm of hand or sole of foot
Superficial vs. Deep
superficial: towards the surface
deep: further in/more internal
Ipsilateral vs. Contralateral vs. Bilateral
ipsilateral: same side
contralateral: opposite side
bilateral: both sides
Origin vs. Insertion
origin: more proximal or towards the midline & least moveable attachment of the muscle
insertion: most moveable attachment of the muscle
Agonist vs. Antagonist
agonist: prime mover
antagonist: action counteracts the agonist movement
Neutralizer
opposes unwanted joint motion
Stabilizer
stabilizes one joint so the desired motion of another joint is perfected
Synergist
assists the movement of the agonist
