Introduction to Neuroanatomy Flashcards
The study of the structure and organization of the nervous system
Neuroanatomy
Brain (cerebral region, brainstem, and cerebellar region) and Spinal Cord (all segments)
Central Nervous System
All nervous system structures NOT encased in bone
Cranial nerves and their nuclei
Spinal nerves and their ganglia (8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal)
Peripheral Nerves
Peripheral Nervous System
Basic unit of the nervous system
Neuron/Nerve Cell
Areas of the CNS that primarily contain neuronal cell bodies and dendrites
Information is integrated here
Gray Matter
Composed of axons, projections of the neurons
Axons convey information away from cell bodies among different parts of the nervous system
White Matter
White matter pathway that connect structures on right and left side of the body
Commissure
One of the most important landmarks in the cerebral cortex
Central Sulcus
Somatic motor cortex
Stimulation of this area results in movement of the opposite half of the body
Precentral Gyrus
Somatic sensory cortex
Postcentral Gyrus
Involved with emotions and the processing of some types of memories
Limbic Cortex
Responsible for visceral, autonomic, and taste functions
Insular Cortex
