Q

Introduction. Feminism? Today vs. Bible? Overview?

A

Equality is a major and important issue in the modern world.
Before, there was an outrageousness because women could not vote, they couldn’t have the same pay as men and they couldn’t have the same kind of power within a career.
Some parts on inequality has come from different aspects of religion; like the Catholic Church for example.
The Church of England, however, has moved forward by allowing women to have a role in church. They have revolutionised and adapted to modern society.

Q

Adam and Eve? Different consequences for each person? Man vs. Women? Quote.

A

The story of Adam and Eve has been thought to play an important role in how different religions see women in church.
It is believed that God created man in his own image but when Adam and Eve disobeyed, Eve is the one who had the negative consequences.
The punishment of Eve is thought to have contributed to the degradation of women in modern society and in churches.
It is thought that the woman was the one who created the original sin and Eve got the negative repercussions.
Eve was the one who was the original sinner whereas Adam simply fell into a deep sleep.
“I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with the pain will bring you children. Your desire will be for your husband and he will rule over you.”
“Adam was formed first, then Eve. Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who became the original sinner.”

Q

Transubstantiation. Division with Catholics?

A

Transubstantiation is a belief that bread and wine are the actual body parts of Jesus but it just keeps the appearance of bread and wine.
When we drink the bread and wine, it is believed that we all become a part of Jesus Christ.
However, the female doesn’t share the same parts of Jesus Christ who is a male so it is believed that it isn’t possible for women to become a part of Jesus Christ.
This is thought to have contributed to the division between religion and modern society, specifically with Catholics as they are still against the idea of women having a superior role in church.
It has caused a rift.

Q

St Paul? Quote.

A

Another contributing factor to the division between religion and churches comes from St Paul, who was essentially ‘anti women’ and was one of the first people to express his views that goes against women.
He believed that women should have no role in church and have no authority over man.
He was the first writer to express his understanding against women.
“A women should learn in quietness and submission.”
“A women should remain quiet in churches and be in full submission, as the law says.”
Timothy was another person who was around at the same time as Paul and said “I do not permit a women to teach or have authority over a man.”

Q

St Paul’s influences? Catholic Church?

A

It is believed that the Catholic Church were heavily influenced by St Paul as they have the same idea that women cannot have a superior role to men within churches.
For example, women cannot be priests.
However, they have modernised their beliefs as they have said women can have a role in church but they simply cannot be priests.
Gives the idea that women still cant have a superior role in church and only men can have the superior role, showing the problems with equality as the churches affect the modern world.

Q

Modern world changes. The pill? Suffragettes? Hilary Clinton?

A

The pill has changed women place in the world forever. When it was introduced it gave women the opportunity to have freewill and take control of their lives.
Women were not placed in a subservient role any more as the pill gave them the chance to have their own careers and have their own money.
Women didn’t have to rely on their husbands and stay at home and look after the children anymore.

The suffragettes have also revolutionised the modern world as the protest changed history forever.
Women fought for years to give women the right to vote and it was eventually granted, this gave women some authority in the world and they can go against men and their beliefs when it came to voting.
It is still considered a recent change, but it has changed societies forever.

Hilary Clinton has also changed the modernised society forever for everybody across the world as she one of the leading candidates for president.
Being the president of the united states is one of the most important jobs in the world, and for a women to be a leading candidate shows the changes the world has shown how the modern world as revolutionised itself for equality and feminism.
Hilary Clinton has also been known to fight for equal pay and equality for all females in her protests, which supports the idea that modern times are changing in regards to feminism.

Q

Church of England? Different to Catholic? Virgin Mary? Libby Bishop?

A

The church of England is a primary example to show how religions have adapted to the changes happening in the modern world as they allow females to have a role within church.
They believe we are all equal in God’s eyes and follow the quote “neither male nor female; we are all one in Jesus Christ.”
Even though all of Jesus’ 12 disciples are men, women are still a heavy influence for Jesus in the Bible and some people look up to the women in the Bible today.
For example; Virgin Mary is one of the primary people in Jesus’ life and she is pictured as a saint and who women in the modern world look up too.

This can all be supported by Libby Lane, who is the first female in the UK to be appointed Bishop in York. This shows how the modern world has influenced churches to revolutionise their beliefs and be a part of the modern world.

Q

Battle within Churches? Jill Briscoe?

A

She was a prominent author who pastors a church with her husband.
She told ‘Christianity Today’ that in 1995, she was silenced within Church a few years ago when she began to teach the Bible to a group of 3,000 teenagers at a youth conference.
She said, at one point a pastor got up and said ‘Stop! In the name of the Lord!’
This is because she was a women, and the idea of her having a role in church was not right to men which is why she was stopped.
This shows how women still struggle to have a superior role in Church in modern society and how things still need to be changed to adapt to the modern world full and achieve full equality.

Q

The label ‘Jezebel’? Women?

A

This is a label often pinned on girls within church who are believed to have any kind of teaching or leadership skills. This is believed to be an attempt to pin women and give them character assassination.
It is the personification of evil.
It comes from a story which Lord Jesus himself at the end of the story refers to the women Jezebel as a warning in the church.

Q

Conclusion? More liberal? Revolutionised? Still some way to go?

A

It is believed now, in the 21st century, that our society is more liberal because things are starting to move forward in terms of equality for women and feminism.
For centuries it has been believed that women should maintain their subservient role but with the revolutionising society, religious beliefs are beginning to adapt and change to the different ways of thinking in regards to women.
However, things are still to be done to keep the modern society moving forward and the churches still have a lot t answer for in terms of equality.
This is in regards to the catholic church and their views on women, they seem to be entrenched in their views on women and for society to truly change and move forward they need to adapt and modernise their views the most.
Overall, there has been drastic changes for society over the centuries and there are still more changes to come. To truly move forward, the churches and society need to work together to re-evaluate their beliefs on women.
