Ion Tests Flashcards
Test for halides?
Add aqueous silver nitrate
Halide test - If chloride ions are present?
A white precipitate is formed. It dissolves on addition of dilute ammonia
Halide test - If bromide ions are present?
A cream precipitate is formed. It dissolves on addition of concentrated ammonia
Halide test - If iodide ions are present?
A yellow precipitate is formed. It is insoluble on addition of both dilute and concentrated ammonia
Test for carbonate ions?
Add dilute nitric acid
Carbonate test - If carbonate ions are present?
Effervescence occurs
Test for sulfate ions?
Add dilute nitric acid to ensure there are no carbonate ions. Add aqueous barium chloride or aqueous barium hydroxide
Sulfate test - If sulfate ions are present?
A white precipitate forms
Test for ammonium ions?
Add aqueous sodium hydroxide, and warm the test tube. Test the gas produced
Ammonium test - If ammonium ions are present?
Damp red litmus paper turns blue when in contact with the gas
Chlorine colour (Halogen test)
In water - Pale green
In cyclohexane - Pale green
Bromine colour (Halogen test)
In water - orange
In cyclohexane - orange
Iodine colour (Halogen test)
In water - brown
In cyclohexane - purple
