Is The Bible True Flashcards
Scientific Truth
The people who wrote the various books of the Bible had the scientific understandings of their day.
Eg: The Bible assumes that the earth was flat and the universe as emerging in 6 days.
Historical Truth
The Bible does contain historical truth.
EG: The Old Testament includes the history of the Jewish people from approximately 2000BC to AD 100. It is a product of many generations remembering and telling, passing on stories.
Symbolic Truth
Much of the religious truth that is told in the Bible is told in symbols. We have to read beneath the symbols to find the religious meaning.
EG: there is a story in the 3rd chapter of the Book of Gensis, where a serpent speaks to the women Eve, and tempts her to eat a fruit that she has been forbidden to eat by God.
Proverbial Truth
Some of the writing in the Bible, especially that found in some of the books in the Old Testament, is kind of everyday wisdom and advice about life that is contained in proverbs.
Moral Truth
Moral truth teaches people how to live their lives, and instructs them in what make up good and bad actions.
Some of the moral teachings in the Bible reflect the limited understanding of the time in which they were written. In Old Testament law, a women who was found committing adult rely was killed by having heavy stones thrown at her. This would never happen today.
Religious Truth
The kind of truth we find in the Bible is religious truth. This means that it conveys important ideas about God, about the universe, about people, about God’s love and care for his people, about his offer of salvation to them, about his presence with his people throughout history.
