Isotopes Flashcards
What are isotopes?
Atoms with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons (and therefore a different mass).
What do isotopes have?
Identical chemical properties since is the # of electrons that determines chemical reactivity, but they will have slightly different physical properties due to the difference in mass.
What are some isotopes? What these isotopes called?
Radioactive and emit radiation (alpha, betta. and gamma); these are called radioisotopes.
What are all elements beyond atomic number 88?
Radioactive
What does the existence of isotopes contribute to?
The average atomic masses of elements on the periodic table.
What is Atomic Mass?
The weighted average of all naturally occurring isotopes according to their percentage abundance on Earth.
