Irish Catholics

A

•In 1923 Scottish church published “the menace of the Irish race on Scottish society” a pamphlet encouraging discrimination against Irish Catholics

•Irish we’re bought in as Navvies and worked long hours for little pay bc of the low skill needed

•Poor housing so loves in slums Irish balked for Cholera, and Typhus

•Irish built string communities centered around catholic religion failed to assimilate

•Irish were viewed as Lazy unlawful drunkards so Irish bosses turned away Irish catholic workers

•only in 1918 did Scot gov give funding to catholic schools before they worked low skilled jobs due to latch of proper education

•introduced Hibernian and Celtic football clubs in 1870s and 1880s

•catholic and Protestants fought in the streets of Glasgow in 1850s and 60s

•in 1870s Catholics were working under Protestant workers unions

Irish protestants

A

•More educated than Irish counterparts, got jobs like Engineers in iron making firms like Bairds of Gartsherrie

•assimilated into workplaces well as they shared a religion and we’re given public jobs eg. train driver

•Protestants had transferable skills such as weaving which was wanted in Glasgow and ayreshire

•Protestants we’re discriminated against as they were seen to be taking jobs

•development of orange order led to conflict (1875 300 orange men attacked by Catholics in aidrie)

A

•opened businesses on Sundays- traditionally a day of rest for the scots

•Opened fish and chip shops for example Alfonso’s in Earlston now Theese fish and chip shops are known as a British staple

•failed to assimilate as they often sent money back home

•failed to assimilate worked long hours and didn’t often socialize out of work with Brit’s and kept Italian last names

• created the collage of italian hairdressers in Glasgow in 1928

•they often shortened their italian names to shorter Brit nicknames such as Giuseppe to joe

•Italians did not tend to marry Brit’s and bought family over to have family run business maintains tradition and language

• opened ice cream Parlors such as Lucas that are still thriving today

•owned own businesses so didn’t interfere in job market such as goldburgs

•imperial tobacco company was at large owned by Jacob kramisch in the 1880s

•accused of oppress toon sweatshops

•looked after own family and poor so didnt strain Brit poor law

•Yiddish newspaper went into decline at the start of the 20th century showing assimilation

•there was evidence of anti demigods such as not being allowed to bawl in some clubs

•in 1888 there were trade unions opposed to Jewish immigration

•some Scots were resentful of Jewish successes in tailoring and tobacco industry e.g. Julius Pinto tailoring company in Glasgow Gorbals

•coal mining they coatbrige in lankenshire saw 5/6000 Lithuanian coal miners

• joined trade unions in time for the 1912 national strike

•originally used at strike breaker and to lower wages

•seen as drunks due to three day long celebrations

•Lithuanians we’re catholic so seen as morally inferior

•Lithuanians went back to Russia to fight during ww1 showing they did not assimilate well

•had own clergy newspapers and shops showing poor assimilation

•changed their names to black or smith
