When connecting tubing to IV Solution bag, when should you clamp the line?
before connecting to prevent air bubbles entering tubing
How full should the drip chamber be?
Half full
How does gravity affect IV infusion?
The higher an IV solution bag is hung the faster it will infuse.
Oppositely, the lower an IV solution bag is hung the slower it will infuse.
How often are IV site, tubing, and bag checked?
Q1 hour
Peripheral line

Central Line
in a deep chest vein
What does IVPB stand for?
IV Piggy Back
When are IVPB’s used?
Secondary and intermittently
How high should an IVPB be hung?
Higher than the primary line.
How often does a saline lock/port need to be flushed?
Q6-8 hrs with 1-2ml of sterile saline
What is the dose to flush a heplock?
10-100units of heparin. Never exceed 100 units.
How to conduct a patency check
Flush 7-10ml of sterile saline
place fingers 1-2 inches above IV site
patient should feel cool when flushing
