Q

What is Marley’s role

A

to warn Scrooge about what will happen after he dies unless he changes, they have similar personalities who are obsessed with money and don’t care about other people - even answers to the same name (‘it was all the same to him’), Marley’s punishments id the consequence of a self centred life, as Scrooge lives the same way it illustrates the fate of Scrooge if he does not change

Q

How is Marley presented (physically)

A

‘death-cold eyes’, he removes a bandage from his head and his jaw drops which gives an horrible image, Marley’s terrifying appearance reflects the frightening nature of his message and makes it more important, he gives off an hellish atmosphere and his clothes are steaming - ideas of hell and eternal suffering, the chain Marley wears is made of money related objects and was forged because he cared more about money than people, the chain is particularly disturbing because Marley tells Scrooge that he bears a similar but larger chain

Q

How does Marley try to help Scrooge

A

Marley regrets that he didn’t change his ways whilst he could so all he can do is offer the chance for Scrooge to change and escape the fate, it is said that he stood invisibly over Scrooge’s shoulder which shows that his a kind of hellish guardian angle, he is acting selflessly as he is helping Scrooge even though he has no hope of redemption himself
