Jesus' Last Days Flashcards

Q

What happened at Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem?

A

They apraoched the Mount of Olives and Jesus sent two disciples on ahead and told them that they would find a colt tied up in the village which they should bring back and if someone asked them what they were doing with it that they should tell them that the Master needs it and will send it back at once.
They went and found one and some people asked them what they were doing but they told them what Jesus had said.
They brought it to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it.
Many people layed their cloaks on the road and others cut branches from nearby fields and spread them on the ground.
People began to shout, “praise God”, “God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord”
Jesus then entered the Temple in Jerusalem and looked round then went to Bethany with his twelve disciples as it was already late in the day.

Q

What happened at the cleansing of the Temple?

A

Jesus went into the Temple into the Court of the Gentiles.
There was shouting, selling, cheating and trading.
Jesus was angry as it should have been God’s house and a place to pray and praise God in quiet.
Jesus strode through overturning the stalls so money scattered everywhere and told them that it was a house of prayer.
The leaders of Jerusalem were now even more determined to get rid of him because they had allowed the people to be in there.

Q

What happened at the Last Supper?

A

Jesus was eating the Passover meal with his disciples.
Jesus had cleaned all of the disciples feet before the supper to teach them to serve others like he did.
He then told them that one of them would betray him.
The disciples were very upset and began to ask him if it was them.
He then broke some bread and said that it was his body broken for you.
He then took some wine and said that it was his blood poured out for many.
He then said to do it in memory of him.
Peter promises that he would never leave Jesus but Jesus told him that three times before the morning Peter would deny knowing him.

Q

What happens when Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane?

A

Jesus took Peter, James and John with him to a special place, a private garden called Gethsemane where Jesus had probably been many times before. He was very sad and told the other disciples to sit ther while he went and prayed. He felt so sad. He then threw himself onto the ground and prayed for God to take the suffering from him. He then came back and found the three disciples asleep and asked them how they fell asleep and told them to keep watch and not fall into temptation. He then went of and prayed again and then came back and they were asleep. He then went for a third time and prayed again. He then told them that it was time he was handed over.

The Jewish authorities and Roman Soldiers then arrived and Judas kissed Jesus to ensure that the right man was arrested. Peter drew a sword and cut of the ear of the High Priest’s servant but Jesus stopped the violence and healed the man. Then the disciples ran of into the darkness like Jesus said they would.

Q

What happend at the Trials of Jesus?

A

Jesus was taken to the house of Caiaphas, the High Priest, where the teachers of law and leders gathered. Peter followed from a distance and sat down with the guards to see how it would end. They all tried to find false evidence against Jesus but couldn’t find any eventhough many of them told lies about him. The High Preist then asked him if he was the Messiah. Jesus replied and said that from then they would see the Son of God sitting on the right side of the Almighty in heaven. The High Priest then shouted that it was Blasphemy and he was found guilty and that he must die. They then spat in his face and beat him.
They asked him it again later and this time he said yes. They knew that in Jewish law this was crime punishable by death but because Palestine was an occupied country only the Romans could put a person to death so he was put in chains and handed over to Pilate the Roman governor.

Q

What happened at the crucifixion and death of Jesus?

A

The Sanhedrin had found Jesus guilty of blasphemy but that wouldn’t have been any interest to the Romans so they said he claimed to be the King of the Jews which posed a threst to the Romans.
Pilate does not think Jesus deserves the death penalty but doesn’t want to anger the Jewish leaders.
At the feast of the Passover it was customary to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd so Pilate asked the corwd Barabbas who had commited murder or Jesus.
The crowd chose Barabbas so he asked againandthey said Barabbas and that they should crucify Jesus.
Pilate then washed his hands to show he was innocent of Jesus’ blood as his wife had told him not to get involved with Jesus and the criwd said let the blood be on them.
Barabbas is released and Jesus is handed over.
Jesus was taken to Pilate’s home where he was whipped with 40 blows.
The soldiers stripped off his clothes, put a scarlet robe on him, made a crown out of thorny branches and placed it on his head. They placed a stick in his right hand to imitate a sceptre and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spat on him, took the robe off, put his own clothes back on and led him out to crucify him.
On the way they met a man from Cyrene called Simon who was forced to carry the cross for a short while. Then they came to Golgotha where nails were driven into Jesus’ wrists and heels to support his body. Jesus’ death was quick because he had already been beaten and lost a lot of blood.
Passers by and teachers of law mocked him telling him to save himself if he was really the Messiah.
Two robbers who were beside him mocked him even though one asked for mercy and Jesus told him that he would be with him in paradise that day.
At noon the whole country was covered in darkness for three hours then Jesus cryed out for God as he felt abandoned. Someone offered him wine vinegar but he refused it.
Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last and at that moment the curtain of temple was torn and the earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people raised to life.
Some people saw and finally believed that he was the Son of God.
Because you couldn’t be crucified over the Sabbath Joseph of Arimathea, a disciple, asked Pilate for Jesus’ body and put it in his own tomb and rolled a stone in front of it.

Q

What happened on the road to Emmaus?

A

It was the same day that Jesus had risen and had spoken to Mary Magdeline when two disciples were going from Jerusalem to Emmaus, one of them called Cleopas and the other could have been his wife. Theywere talking sadly about Jesus’ death.
Then Jesus appeared to them but they did not know it was him and he asked what they were talking about. They told him the news about Jesus’ death and how he had risen but Jesus told them that it had to happen for the will of God.
They then asked Jesus if he wanted to stay the night with them so he did and Jesus sat down took some bread, blessed it and broke it then gave it to the disciples. And at once they knew who it was but Jesus’ disappeared.
They then went to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples the good news in the Upper Room and they told them everthything.
Then when they were speaking Jesus appeard to them and many were scared but Jesus reassured them that he wasn’t a ghost by showing them the wounds.
He appeared to the disciples many times before ascending into heaven.

Q

What is the story of doubting Thomas?

A

It was late Sunday evening, and the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Then Jesus appeared to them and the disciples were filled with joy. One of the disciples, Thomas, was not with them when Jesus appeared so they told him about it but Thomas didn’t believe them. A week later the disciples were gathered and Thomas was with them and then Jesus came and said to Thomas to put his finger on his wounds and to believe. Then Thomas believed and was happy.
