Fort Dearborn does NOT exist today. There is a museum standing in the spot where it once existed.
Did the colonists get along with the Native Americans? Why or why not?
The Native Americans were very angry that their hunting ground had been taken over and attacked the settlements.
What happened during the Fort Dearborn Massacre?
During the Fort Dearborn massacre:
- The people in the fort needed to get out to stay safe, but there was no safe way out
- The soldiers were ordered to leave the fort despite it not being safe
- The commander of the fort followed orders
- August 15, 1812 the soldiers and settlers left the fort and many died
What steps did Illinios have to take to become a State?
In order to become a state:
- Delegates meet
- Delegates created a constitution for the state
- Delegates had to agree on all points in the constitution
- Congress had to approve the state constitution
