Karst Topography Flashcards
What is limestone?
A sedimentary rock which largely consists of calcium carbonate minerals.
Where were the rocks deposited?
Land masses which were under the sea several million years ago. Also in fresh water areas.
What are the types of limestones?
Coralline- made up of the remains of coral polyps.
Oolitic- a calcium precipitate form from a solution of sea water.
White limestone- 90% calcium carbonate (weak limestonne)
Yellow Limestone- made of mud. (Strong limestone)
What are the characteristics of limestones?
Layered Horizontally - pervious
Joined Vertically
Small holes between particles for water to pass through- Porous
White in color
Good aquifers
Where is cockpit country?
Rugged area of peaks valleys and caves located in west central Jamaica
In which parishes does the cockpit country extends?
St Elizabeth
St James
Trelawny
Manchester
St Ann
What are some Caribbean islands limestone dominant in?

What is the chemical formula for carbonic acid?
H2 CO3
Chemical formula for calcium carbonate
CaCO3
What is the name of the two theories is which cockpits are formed?
Solution and Collapse theory
What are poljes?
Large flat floored depression found in a limestone area.
How do poljes develop?
Carbonation along vertical joints and cracks in limestone
