Key Geographic Concepts Flashcards
Change
Dynamic geographic phenomena. Can occur at varying rates, times, durations, scales.
Distance
Absolute or linear distance (km, m)
Relative distance (time it takes to travel from one location to another)
Psychological distance (perception of distance)
Cultural distance (re. attitudes and social norms)
DIstribution
Arrangement of phenomena in space or time
Movement
Change or expansion in location of one or more phenomena from original to new location
Place
Parts of the Earth’s surface which are identified and given meaning by people
Process
Identifiable series of actions or steps which lead to change or preservation of phenomena
Region
A definable area of the Earth’s surface that contains one or more common characteristics that distinguish it from neighbouring areas
Scale
Map scale (relationships b/w measurements on a map and actual measurements on the ground)
Observational scale (conceptual and refers to l relative size of phenomena e.g local, regional, national, international, global)
Spatial association
Degree to which two or more phenomena are similarly arranged over space
Sustainability
Capacity of the environment to continue to support life
Environment
The world around us. Interconnected living and non-living physical elements of Earth’s surface and atmosphere, as well as human–made features and human conditions
Interconnection
All places and environments are interconnected and they do not exist in isolation
