Key Words Flashcards
Selective breeding
Breeding plants and animals for a particular genetic characteristics
Variation
Differences between individuals in a population
Evolution
Change in the inherited characteristics of a population over time due to natural selection
Species
Group of similar organisms capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring
Genome
Entire genetic material of an organism
Genetic screening
Tests to discover a persons genome
DNA
Chemical found in nucleus of cells
Extinction
The permanent loss of all members of a species
Causes for extinction?
Habitat destruction
Hunting or fishing from humans
Environment change
Extinction of species in the food chain of an animal
How can resistant bacteria be reduced?
Doctors not over prescribing antibiotics
Patients should always complete the time frame for consuming antibiotics
Speciation
The formation of a new species due to evolution
May cause extinction of a species
How are fossils formed?
1) Organism gets covered in sediment after it dies- mud/sediment builds up on top of it
2) soft parts of organism decay/are eaten
3) bones/hard parts do not decay
4) minerals enter bones - preserve organisms remains
5) layers of sediment form sedimentary rock over time
