What are the categories of meniscal injury
Acute
Degenerative

Acute
Meniscal tear that occurs more in geriatrics.
60% of people over 65 will have this tear
May occur from minor event and have no symptoms
Dengerative
This portion of meniscus that is the most commonly injured because it is firmly attached to a collateral ligament and joint capsule.
Medial Meniscus
Firmly attached to medial collateral ligament
This portion of the meniscus is more mobile because it does not attach to a collateral ligament or joint capsule and is less injured
Lateral Meniscus
What portion of the meniscus receives blood flow?
The outer 1/3 of the edges
Why is healing of the meniscus often difficult?
Healing of the meniscus is difficult because blood flow only goes to the outer 1/3. so only the outer 1/3 have a great chance of healing
