Knee Anatomy Flashcards
Knee
the largest most complex joint in body
Bones
- Femur
- Tibia (bears on weight)
- Fibula (bears no weight)
- Patella
Type of Joint
Hinge Joint
Ligaments
connects bone to bone (injuries to ligament are sprains)
Cruciate
Means to cross
Collateral ligaments
are located on the sides
Plane, Axis, and Movement
Plane – sagittal
Axis – Bilateral
Movements – Flexion and Extension
4 Major Ligaments of the Knee
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
Medial collateral ligament (MCL)
Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
Movements
Primary Movements
- Flexion – bending
- Extension – straightening
Other lesser movements
- Rotation (knee must be flexed)
- Gliding (to a small degree during flexion and extension) (tibial translation)
Genu valgus
“knock kneed” (L-shaped)
Genu varus
“bow legged” (Round or curved to outside)
Genu recurvatum
knee curved backwards
Muscles:
1.Quadriceps (4)
- vastus medialis obliques
- vastus lateralis
- vastus intermedius
- rectus femoris (biarticular – two joints)
Muscles:
1.Hamstrings (3)
semimembranosus
semitendinosus
biceps femoris
Muscles:
Gastrocnemius
Calf
