1
Q

Reasons against appeasement in the 1930s:

A

Strength of Germany- Germany was becoming more militarily powerful than Britain and France

Encouraged more aggression- each gamble Hitler got away with he was encouraged to take further risks

Alarmed the USSR- Britain and France were giving the impression that they would not stand in the way of Hitlers plans to expand eastwards. This contributed to the nazi-soviet pact.

A

War- France and Britain didn’t want a repeat of the First World War in which Britain lost around 800,000 soldiers

Economic problems- Britain and France still has severe economic problems from the Great Depression

Treaty- many thought that the treaty was too harsh and that, if it was put right, Germany would be peaceful again

Communism- they were more worried about Stalin than Hitler and thought they could use Germany as a buffer to communism.

Usa- the USA were reluctant to be dragged into another war but France and Britain were reluctant to fight without them

British empire- they weren’t sure that the British empire would support them in another war

Q

In the Abyssinian crisis:
What was the Abyssinian crisis?

A

In 1934, Italian troops kill some people in Abyssinia
In 1935, Haile Selassie asked the league for help. Italy ignores the leagues moral condemnation and invaded anyway. The league put small economic sanctions on Italy but don’t even close the Suez Canal. This led to the Hoare- Laval pact which undermined the Leagues authority.
In 1936, Italy takes the Abyssinian capital and leaves the league.
