Define discrimination
the act of making unjustified distinctions between people based on the groups, classes or other categories to which they belong or are perceived to belong.
Why does discrimination happen?
uninformed attitudes and beliefs lead to discriminatory practices that result in unfair treatment or individuals or groups of people.

the factors that people may be discriminated for
What are some examples of the basis of discrimination?
- age
- appearance/ height
- location
- hair colour
- gender
- religion/ culture
- race
- social class/ identity
Define direct discrimination
when someone/ group of people are treated less favourably than another person because of a protected characteristic
eg homophobia, racism, sexism
Define indirect discrimination
when a policy/ practice/ rule applies to everyone in the same way but has a worse effect on some people than others

Definition of labelling
when we identify individuals as members of particular groups and categorise them
Define stereotyping
characteristics that society instinctively attributes to groups of people to classify them
Define prejudice
preconceived evaluation of a person based on their perceived characteristics without reasonable evidence or justification, usually negative
Define bullying
trying to harm or intimidate or coerce someone perceived as vulnerable, take advantage and exploit them
