(L10) Mechanics 6 - SHM / Waves Flashcards

1
Q

What is Hooke’s law?

A

For spring and many other materials, the lenth change is proportional to magnitude of the restoring force.

F= -kx
k is the spring constant

2
Q

What if there’s suspension involved and we need to find k?

A

Use F=mg as the mass will be affected by gravity.
Rearragne F= -kx to find k=-(F/x)
then solve for k

Q

As spring is compressed/stretched by force, F, how can we find work done on spring?

A

W=Fd –> W=1/2k*x^2

Q

What is SHM/what causes oscillation?

A

A mass attatched to a spring will always experience a restoring force back towards its equilbrium position, if displaced.

Hence, it will oscillate.

17
Q

What is the period for a simple pendulum?

A
18
Q

What is the restoring force of a pendulum?

A

Restoring force is T,horizontal = -kx

19
Q

What is k of a pendulum?

A

k of a pendulum..
k= mg/L

20
Q

How to find velocity of any wave?

A

v =fλ or v=λ/T

21
Q

What is λ?

A

Used to denote wavelength.

1/2 λ is 1/2 T
1 full λ is one full cycle of oscillation.

22
Q

What is amplitude?

A

Half the wavelenth.
Distance from equilibrium to max.

23
Q

What are transverse waves?

A

Oscillation is transverse (perpendicular) to propogation direction.

24
Q

What are longitudinal waves?

A

Oscillation is in direction of propogsation.

25
Q

What is constructive interference?

A

IWave 1 and 2 in phase

26
Q

What is destructive inteerference?

A

Wave 1 and 2 out of phase

27
Q

Constructive or destructive interference? Why?

A

Destructive. The λ intergers won’t add to a whole number. So a trough will meet a peak.

28
Q

Constructive or destructive interference? Why?

A

Constructive. The λ interfers will add to a whole number as a peak meets a peak.

29
Q

What is a standing wave?

A

A string is attatched to a wall. The string is made to oscillate up and down.
Since the far end is attatched to the wall, it can’t move.
This is due to the wall exerting a reactive force.
The wave reflects with a 180° phase change.

30
Q

What is a node?

A

Places where string is not moving

31
Q

What is an anti-node?

A

Places where the string is moving

32
Q

What is damping?

A

When a waves amplitude decreases overtime.

33
Q

Can waves carry energy?

A

yess.

energy of waves fucks your ears nerves overtime

34
Q

What is potential energy of a wave equation?

A
