(L17) Thermodynamics 1 Flashcards
What is thermal energy?
energy contained within a system
-accountable for temperature
-total KE + PE
What is heat?
Flow of thermal energy from one object/substance to another
What is temperature?
Temperature is a measure of average kinetic energy of particles in a substance.
What happens to temperature?
If temperature changes, what is transferred between the objects?
How would you find the thermal energy of the combined system?
What happens to temperature?
Is anything transferred between
the objects?
How would you find the thermal
energy of the combined system?
What is used to measure temperature?
Thermometer (kelvin)
What is colder than 0 kelvin?
nothing can be colder than 0 kelvin
What is zeroth law of thermodynamics?
If T1 = T2 and T1 = T3
then T1 = T2 = T3
What is 1st law of thermodynamics?
Energy can not be created or destroyed in a closed system. Only altered in form.
energy conservation.
ep—>ek—>thermal energy
How is thermal equilbirum a dynamic equilibrium?
What if one object has less thermal energy?
Dynamic equilbrium as thermal energy is constantly travelling between objects/substances, heat.
Equilbrium: Equal flow of thermal energy in each direction
1 object w/ higher thermal energy:
Unequal flow of thermal energy. Net flow towards lower thermal energy object, but still flow in both directions.
In human body, is core or surface hotter?
Core of body is hotter
What happens to core temp and surface temp at night?
Core temp drops while surface temp raises
if these hit the sweet spot, could they have same temp?
yush… sizemass and temperature dependent
