Lake district- upland landscape Flashcards
What kind of valleys did glaciers create in the Lake District?
Deep U shaped valleys that are now filled by lakes
What are misfits?
Small rivers that flow through U valleys, rather than glaciers
What do misfits deposit, and what does this cause?
They deposit silt and mud known as alluvium
This makes the valley bottom fertile for farming
What makes the ground rough in the Lake District?
Rock fragments called scree
What does scree consist of and how is it made?
Angular rock pieces created through freeze-thaw weathering
What two rapid slope processes affect valley sides?
Rockfalls and landslides
What are rockfalls?
When scree fragments move easily
What are landslides?
When rain adds to the weight of weathered rock, causing it to fall easily
What slower processes occur in the Lake District?
Slope processes, particularly soil creep
