Describe large farms
Vary extensive, flat, owned by a single farmer (not gov’t owned)
What type of crop is grown?
Monoculture
What is the labour suppply?
large, 100-1000 persons, skilled labour/ semi
What machinery is used?
Harvesters, ploughs, automated irrigation schemes, drones
What is the capital intensive?
It requires a large start-up money to invest in land, labour, machinery, feeds and export.
What are the benefits?
It earns foreign exchange in export markets, employs persons semi/ highly skilled in research and development in production, commercial arable farming can be used in secondary industries like agro-processing.
What are the problems?
Pests and diseases can wipe out an entire crowd, weedicides and pesticides cause land/water pollution that can damage the environment and health of persons. It may cause countries to import since it only relies on one crop and land degradation.
