Matthew 13:47-52
This parable explains that when fisherman pulled up the net, they then had to separate the fish- the good ones they could use for food and the bad ones they had to throw out. The parable goes on to explain that this is how it will be at the return of Jesus. The angels, like the fisherman, will separate the righteous from the wicked.
Define eschatology
the study of the events at the end of the world/last things
What is the objective of eschatology?
to help us surrender our lives to Christ and to help us live in the present while walking in the light of eternity.
Define millennium
- the messianic earthly reign of 1,000 years
- Satan restrained
- age of justice and peace
- the fruitfulness on earth is increased
Pre-millenialism
- Revelation 20:1-5
- the parousia will be before the millennium
- it is a literal interpretation
- Cycle: rapture, great tribulation, parousia, the 1000 year reign, final rebellion, judgment, eternal kingdom
Post-millenialism
- Matthew 24:1-14
- Parasouia is after the gospel has been preached throughout the whole world
- the victory of the gospel in human society- the transformation that precedes the millennial kingdom
- Cycle: the age of the church, mission/evangelism, the millennium, great rebellion, parousia, judgment, the eternal kingdom
A-millenialism
- there is no future reign on earth
- Christ reigns now in and through His church in the age of the church, there no set time frame
- the church proclaims the gospel and produces fruit
- Cycle: the age of the church, parousia, judgment, eternal kingdom
What are the meanings of Gehenna?
- hell
- any place of suffering and torment
- unquenchable fire
- complete darkness
- culmination of the rejection of God
