A

Parents and community play a pivotal role in successful schools. We know that when parents are involved - children are more involved and have more successful lives.

Providing opportunities for parental feedback, leadership, volunteering, and visits to children’s classes.
Parents and teachers should create improvement goals for children and work collaboratively to meet them.

Opportunities for meaningful input on academic decisions that impact learning.

It takes a village, and parents and teachers are on the same team–to help children become lifelong learners, successful people, and engaged citizen

Q

A parent is angry with your disciplinary decision regarding their student. They believe you have unfairly punished their child and demand you retract the punishment.

A

Parent relationships are always important and the first thing I try to do in these situations is listen to the parent and understand their concerns and encourage ongoing communication throughout the process. Once communication is broken it’s much harder to maintain ongoing relationship and solution.

  • Understand the new information and present the facts.
  • Review policy based on facts
  • Assure the parent we both want their child to be successful and working together will lead to agreeable outcomes.
  • Ask for more time to review all information before making any decisions -

Discipline can be a challenge. Having clear policies in place that have fair consequences and focusing more energy on prevention and students learning from their mistakes supports a positive learning environment. Students need opportunities to learn and grow, including making mistakes.
