What are the landmarks for a spay?
Xiphoid to pubis. Far lateral, but you will drape just inside the mammary glands
What is an important pre-op step before a spay?
Express the bladder
Where should a spay incision be made in dogs?
Start just caudal to umbilicus, cranial third of the distance between the umbilicus and the pubis
Where should a spay incision be made in cats?
Middle third of the way between umbilicus and pubis
Where should the incision into the abdomen be made?
on the linea alba
How do you make the incision into the linea alba?
hold scaple upside down and poke hole, then extend with scissors
Which ovary is placed more cranially?
Right
Which side of the body has the spleen?
Left
What is the ligament that is more caudal on the ovary?
Proper ligament
What ligament should be stretched/broken to expose the ovary?
Suspensory
In what direction does the suspensory ligament run?
Extends cranially/dorsally from cranial pole of ovary
In what direction does the vascular supply of the ovary rin?
Arises from the dorsal surface of the ovary and then goes almost directly dorsal to the caudal pole of the kidney
What clamps are used on the pedicles?
3 carmalts if possible, if not then use 2 carmalts proximally and 1 kelly/crile distally
What is the top clamp on the pedicle used for?
Cutting guide
Where exactly is the first clamp placed on the pedicle?
Abdominal base of the pedicle
