Lecture 13: Post. Thigh & Popliteal Fossa Flashcards
What is the common proximal attachment for posterior thigh muscles?
Ischial tuberosity -> except short head of biceps femoris
What is the innervation for the posterior thigh muscles?
Tibial division of sciatic nerve -> except short head of biceps femoris
What nerve innervates the short head of biceps femoris?
Common fibular portion of the sciatic nerve
What is the function of the posterior thigh muscles?
All flex the leg
All except for short head of biceps femoris extend thigh
What nerve innervates gracilis?
Obturator n
What nerve innervates semitendinosus?
Tibial division of sciatic nerve
What nerve innervates sartorius?
Femoral nerve
What muscles insert at Pes Anserinus?
Gracilis
Semitendinosus
Sartorius
What is the innervation of the adductor magnus muscle?
Hamstring portion = tibial division of sciatic nerve
Adductor portion = posterior division of obturator nerve
What is the function of the hamstring portion of adductor magnus?
Extend thigh (doesnt cross knee joint so cant do anything for the leg)
What is the deepest structure in the popliteal fossa?
Popliteal artery
Where does the popliteal artery come from?
It was the femoral artery -> the femoral artery becomes the popliteal artery once it passes through the adductor hiatus
What does the popliteal artery give rise to?
Genicular branches
Why do we need the genicular anastomosis?
Because when you bend at the knee you are occluding the popliteal artery, so this provides blood supply to the knee during that
What artery can be traced all the way from the thigh to the knee and is able to supply blood to the knee in the event of a femoral artery injury?
Descending branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery
