Lecture 2 (Nervous System) Flashcards
Functionally - what 2 classes is the NS divided into?
I) Somatic Nervous System (voluntary)
Ii) Autonomic NS (involuntary)
Structurally- what two classes is the NS divided into?
I) CNS & ii) PNS
Nervous tissue consists of what 2 cell types?
1) nerve cells (neurons)
2) neuroglia (glia, glial cells)
What makes up the CNS?
Brain & sc
What makes up the peripheral NS?
Nerves (cranial) & glia (sc)
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
31** (c1-8/ t1-12/l1-5/s1-5/co1)
How many pairs of cranial nerves are there?
12
What does the somatic nervous system affect?
Skel. Musc. (Via somatMotor neurons)
What does the Sympathetic (SNS) & Parasympathetic (PSNS) do?
SNS uses visceromotor (efferent) n’s to affect organs (smooth muscle/cardiac m/glands)
What does the PSNS do?
Uses visceroSensory (afferent) n’s to affect receptor organs
Where are sympathetic nerves typically found?
Thoracolumbar region
What region are parasympathetic n’s found?
Brainstem & sacrum
Give ex’s of ventral (front) body cavities:
Thoracic c & diaphragm & abdominpelvic c.
Give ex’s of dorsal (back) cavities:
Cranial c & spinal c
Name the 3 diff types of meninges (CT) covering the CNS.
- Dura mater (tough outer)
- Arachnoid mater (spider web)
- Pia mater (skin on brain surface)
Brain contains 4 ventricles of the brain.. Identify and draw them out.
Lateral ventricle (front), 3rd ventricle (beneath), aqua duct (connects 3rd & 4th), 4th ventricle
What is the site of csf production?
Choroid plexus (within lateral ventr.)
What is the site of csf release from ventricles to subarachnoid space?
Medial & lateral apertures
What are the 2 functions of csf?
- Physical support/ cushions
2. Homeostasis (acts as a sub for the lack of lymphatic in brain)
