Lecture 22 Flashcards
Describe the Oral Cavity
It is an opening in the mouoth exctending from the oral opening fo the mouth to the anterior faucial pillars
Describe the pharyngeal cavity
tube extending from just behind the nasal cavities superiorly to the esophagus and epiglottis inferiorly
Describe the buccal cavity
lateral to the oral cabity the space between teh teeth and the cheeks
bounded by the cheeks laterally, teeth medially and lips anteriorly
Describe the nasal cavity
bounded by the cribiform plate of the ethmoid and the sphenoid bone superiorly, the hard palate inferiorly, the nares anteriorly and the nasopharynx posteriorly
What are the four cacvities of the vocal tract?
oral cavity
buccal cavity
nasal cavities
pharyngeal cavity
What are the important landmarks/parts of the oral and buccal cavities?
hard palate
rugae
velum
uvula
anterior faucial pillar
posterior faucial pillar
palatine tonsils
Where would you touch to make someone gag?
anterior faucial pillar
What are the important parts/landmarks of the nasal cavities?
superior nasal conchae
middle nasal conchae
inferior nasal conchae
What are the important parts/landmarks of the pharyngeal cavity?
torus tubarius (orifice of the eustacian tube)
pharyngeal tonsil
velo-pharyngeal port
What are the functions of the teeth?
mastication
speech production
How many teeth are on each part of the mouth and what bones are they found in?
16 upper teeth in the maxillae
16 lower teeth in the mandible
What are the types of teeth and how many of each are there?
central incisor-4
lateral incisor- 4
cuspid - 4
bicuspid- 8 (2 sets)
molar- 12 (3 sets)
What is a class I occlusion?
upper teeth align with lower teeth; first mandibular molar is 1/2 a tothe advancedof the first maxillary molar
What is a class II occulsion?
first mandibular molar is retracted by at least one tooth
results in buckteeth
What is a class III occlusion?
the first mandibular molar is advanced by one or more tooth of the maxillary molar
Resulting in “prognathic jaw”
